The Cricket World Cup is the international championship of One Day International (ODI) cricket. The idea of the ODI World Cup was first given in 1970. ICC announced the first ODI Worldcup in 1975 which was played in England.8 teams participated in that World Cup India, Srilanka, Australia, England, Pakistan, West Indies, East Africa, and New Zealand. West Indies won that first World Cup defeating Australia in the final by 17 runs.

It is interesting to note that the First World Cup 1975 was played with 60 overs and players wore white shirts as in test matches nowadays.

Types of World Cups

Three types of world cups are introduced by the International Cricket Board(ICC) that are listed below.

1. ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup (ODI):

ICC ODI Cricket Worldcup

It is the oldest and most demanded  ICC World Cup. It is played every four years and features 10 teams competing in a round-robin format followed by a knockout stage. In this format, the top four teams are qualified for two Semi-finals ICC men’s ODI World Cup with 1 rank vs 4 rank and 2 rank vs 3 rank. The final is played between two unbeatable teams.

2. ICC Men’s T20 World Cup:

ICC T20 World Cup is the most recent addition to the International Cricket Board. ICC T20 World Cup was first played in 2007 and is played every two years. ICC men’s T20 World Cup is a shorter format of the game, with each team playing 20 overs in the first innings and 20 overs in the second innings. In this format, 2 groups are formed and each group has 5 teams. 2 teams from each group can qualify for the semi-final which is played against two teams of another group.

ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup (ODI):

Women’s World Cup tournament is held every four years and 10 teams compete in a round-robin format followed by a knockout stage. This format is played as same as the ICC men’s ODI Worldcup. The Women’s World Cup is the biggest achievement for women to play cricket.

Additional ICC Tournaments held by ICC

ICC Champions Trophy (ODI): This tournament was held every four years from 1998 to 2017. It featured the top eight ranked ODI teams in the world and was played in a knockout format. The first Champion Trophy was won by South Africa. They defeated the West Indies in the final by four wickets.

ICC World Test Championship (Test): This tournament was launched in 2019 and is played over a two-year cycle. It features the top nine ranked Test teams in the world and plays a final between the top two ranked teams. This ICC World Test Champion was on by New Zealand defeating India in the final.

ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup (ODI): This tournament is held every two years and features the top 16 under-19 cricket teams in the world. It is played in a round-robin format followed by a knockout stage. The purpose of announcing this World Cup was to promote younger as they are the future stars of every team.
