A United Nations special rapporteur has urged the world to take action to halt what she called “Israel’s genocide” in Gaza. The silence of the international community is allowing even more violence and destruction to take a hold of Palestine,” the UN expert on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territory, Francesca Albanese, cautioned.

Thousands of Palestinians had killed since the start of the Israeli military action. Most victims are said to be women and children, according to recent health reports. The suffering in Gaza has reached a such a stage that the world cannot ignore it, Albanese said.

She also focused on the destruction of homes, schools and hospitals, describing the situation as a humanitarian catastrophe.

In contrast with other UN envoys, who by habit use carefully worded language, Albanese directly charged Israel with crimes amounting to genocide.Attacking civilians, obstructing aid and destroying infrastructure are all illegal under international law, she emphasized.

“Israel has turned Gaza into a graveyard for defenseless people,” she said at a news conference in Geneva.

The rapporteur called on influential nations, such as the United States and the EU, to halt further weapons sales and to cut off funding to Israel. She also called on world leaders to uphold international law and to put pressure on Israel to end its military actions.

Albanese demanded a ceasefire, complete humanitarian access and accountability for those responsible for war crimes.

With no end in sight, international pressure is mounting.Human rights groups, world leaders and the public now call for an end to bloodshed immediately.Albanese’s poignant message is a call to refocus world attention on Gaza, where millions are still waiting for justice and peace.
