Trump Warns of Heavy Tariffs on India, Including on Russian Oil

Trump Warns of Heavy Tariffs on India

Gofrixty [31 July 2025] – Donald Trump reportedly warns India Former US President Donald Trump has warned India that if he comes back to power he will slam with a fine on Indian exports, in the shape of submission to Increase tariffs to 25%. He also said India will have to feel “the pain” for continuing Russian oil purchases and defense purchases, a “disrespectful” action relative to U.S. interests.

Trump announced the imposition of the helalo tariffs at a campaign rally in Ohio, and took a jab at other countries who, according to him, “take advantage of American trade while cozying up to our enemies.” He singled out India, whose government he said had disregarded U.S. concerns about the deepening of India’s energy and military links to Russia.

The markets reacted immediately. The Indian rupee slipped to ₹87.72 against the U.S. dollar, close to its weakest point this year, and the Sensex and Nifty50 indexes were both trading heavily in the red at the open. The country’s largest export market is the United States, and investors sold off stocks in heavily export-reliant sectors, such as textiles, auto parts and pharmaceuticals over fears that they would have less access to the American market.

Trump didn’t stop at tariffs. He said that any country that “indirectly finances” Russia’s war effort would “pay a price.” He referred to India’s purchase of cheap Russian crude as “fueling the enemy’s fire” and vowed to deal with it firmly if he were elected again.

India has not however, responded officially to the threats of US President Donald Trump even as New Delhi continues to chart its independent foreign policy, say sources. Analysts also say that India might accelerate trade negotiations with the U.S. to try to avoid further harm.

Trump’s comments arrive a few months before the U.S. holds elections this year, and many view the comments as part of his bigger efforts to put pressure on trading partners. Still, Indian diplomats insist they will resist any unilateral moves, and will look for a balanced, respectful dialogue should Mr. Trump win a second term.

In the coming weeks — for both countries — could be particularly critical as both navigate escalating tensions a fragile world trade order.
