Gofrixty [30 July 2025] – Ex-president Trump concluded a new deal between the US and the EU after an informal meeting with EU President Ladenaus Ursula von der Leyen. The two leaders met after a round of golf at Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland, seamlessly mixing diplomacy with leisure in a manner consistent with the former president.
Trump himself played with von der Leyen on the course, and engaged in a roundabout discussion on trade imbalances and tariffs that have long troubled U.S.-EU relations. Pressing for a favorable deal: Trump wanted wins for American agriculture exports, auto tariffs and digital products, sources said. Von der Leyen, for her part, emphasized mutual benefit and environmental standards that mirrored Europe’s climate policies.
The two leaders found common ground on major economic issues. They committed to cut certain tariffs, simplify customs operations and beef up digital trade protections. Trump hailed the result as “a win for American farmers, tech companies and workers.” He said that face time was vital in diplomacy, and that playing relaxed golf had opened the way for a constructive dialogue.

EU president Donald Tusk said the pact is the first trade deal on which the EU and US have agreed, and that it will ensure trade between the two remains stable, after years of tension. She said the meeting was a “very unusual but productive” and added that Trump’s direct approach helped in the negotiation.
Analysts see the deal as an important step in restoring U.S.-EU ties. Many economists say the deal could raise trade flows between the two sides by billions of dollars annually. Trump also foreshadowed more talks and implied future cooperation for energy and security.
The meeting highlighted the unusual way that Trump has sought to practice diplomacy, some of which emerges haphazardly. Critics have derided the “casualness” of such meetings, but proponents maintain they are effective. Trump’s team will now brief Congress and finalize the paperwork required to put the new trade terms into action.
