Robot fish addresses plastic in the ocean

British scientists have developed a robot fish to clear plastic from oceans, rivers and lakes. This cutting-edge robot, named after its function Spring-Robotic Filtering Gillbert utilizes gill-like filters to entrap the micro plastics in water whilst swimming. It is part of a broader trend that’s using technology to remediate pollution.

Gillbert swims and looks like a real fish. It creates a vacuum in front of it as moves through the water and pulls more water into its mouth-like entrance. Inside, specialized mesh filters capture tiny particles of plastic — some as small as 2 millimeters — before the clean water flows back out through its sides. The idea behind this design is based on the natural filtration principles of real fish gills.

The robot is not merely an experiment in science. Already, it has been tested in lakes and other freshwater bodies. While he is still testing it, the results so far are promising. Researchers think that with some more work, Gillbert could be useful in cleaning up those hard-to-reach places where traditional cleanup tools don’t do well.

Gillbert is powered by traditional batteries and remote-controlled for now. It was said in some rumors to have the ability eat plastic for power, but that is not true. It doesn’t dissolve or metabolize plastic — its function is to gather it. Yet the technology is proof that there might be a big role for small, smart machines in future environmental protection.

The creators of Gillbert have released their design as open-source, too. That means anyone — engineers, students and even big environmental groups have dabbled in the concept of late — can build their own version or riff on it. It’s a bold attempt to raise awareness and engage more people in trying to solve the plastic crisis.

Pollution from plastic is still a menace to marine life and the ocean ecosystem. But creations like Gillbert are a reminder that science and ingenuity can provide actual solutions. Its not going to single-handedly solve the whole problem, but this robot fish is an important reminder: we have what it takes to do something about all that plastic in our oceans —if only wed start using them.
