Gofrixty [02 August 2025] – Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the biathlon, died on July 28, 2025 descending from mountaineering Laila Peak Pakistan. She was only 31. The accident happened while Laura and her climbing partner, Marina Eva Krauss, were descending the mountain’s steep slopes when they began rappelling from a height of about 6,096 meters (20,000 feet).
On their way down, at about 5,700 meters (or roughly 18,700 feet), Laura was hit by a sudden rockfall. She fainted at once and there was not a sign of life. Krauss, who attempted to get up there but could not reach her because of the unstable hillside and ongoing rockslides. She issued a distress call and waited hours, hoping rescue was on the way. In the end, she had to rappel down on her own and get back to base camp in one piece.
Rescue teams couldn’t reach the site because of hazardous weather and terrain. Helicopters tried flyovers but reported seeing no movement or life. They ultimately scratched the mission. Laura had previously written that she did not want her body recovered if it placed anyone else’s life at risk. Her family had wanted that, and the team honored it.
