Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reached out to the Leader of the Opposition, inviting him for talks about picking the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). This step marks a key moment as the country prepares for a leadership change in the Election Commission.
Following the Constitution
Pakistan’s Constitution, in Article 213, says the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition must work together to select a new CEC. With the current CEC’s term ending soon, the government wants to avoid any issues or gaps in leadership.
To start the process, Prime Minister Shehbaz sent a formal letter to Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan. He called for an immediate meeting to make sure the transition goes smoothly and to avoid any confusion or power vacuum.

Working Together
In his letter, Shehbaz stressed the need for both sides to work as partners. He pointed out that agreeing on a new CEC would help keep the country’s elections fair and free from outside pressure.
He wrote that the Election Commission should stay independent and trusted. For this to happen, both the government and opposition must agree on who leads it.
Opposition’s Next Steps
So far, the opposition has not responded publicly to the invitation. Some political watchers think this could be a chance for both groups to ease tension in Parliament and bring more stability before the next national vote.
