Investigator at U.S. Embassy in Norway Spied for Russia and Iran, Authorities Say

Investigator at U.S. Embassy

Gofrixty [24 July 2025] – A security guard at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway, was arrested by the authorities there. They charged him with spying for Russia and Iran over a period of a number of years. Officials, who have not released his name publicly, said the guard was a dual citizen.

The suspect collected sensitive information about the operations and personnel of the embassy, the investigators said. He then supplied that information to foreign intelligence services. The man secretly worked, eluding discovery for years, and gaining the confidence of the embassy’s security apparatus, sources close to the investigation told Reuters.

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) is investigating following information from international partners. They tracked communications of the suspect and his financial records, which detailed frequent communication with people identified as agents of both the Russian and the Iranian governments. They suspect that he shared with them building diagrams, staff schedules and other classified security details.

U.S. officials assisted the investigation. They accused the breach and promised to bolster their security measures at their embassy in Oslo. American diplomats in Norway would not discuss the specifics of the case, but confirmed that the embassy had reviewed and updated its background checks on staff.

Prosecutors in Norway said that they would charge the suspect under national security laws. They described the case as “serious” and said it also constituted a major risk for both Norwegian and allied interests.

Some analysts see this case as symptomatic of a larger pattern of foreign espionage against NATO-member nations. Intelligence experts said embassies, which also act as hubs for diplomatic and security activity, frequently fall prey to spies.

This incident reflects rising tensions between the west and such nations as Russia and Iran. Both sides are still engaged in aggressive intelligence tactics, Norwegian officials said.

The suspect is due to appear in court next month. Prosecutors will introduce evidence gathered over months of surveillance and digital forensics.
