Extreme Weather Causes Floods in Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan

Sudden Weather Brings Heavy Losses

A sharp change in the weather has led to flash floods across parts of Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan this week. Intense heat and strong monsoon rains hit the region at the same time, causing rivers and streams to overflow. Many low-lying communities are underwater, with homes and key roads damaged.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had warned about this weather shift, linking it to climate change and unpredictable seasonal changes now common in the region.

Homes and Roads Affected

Districts in southern Punjab, including Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, and Multan, have seen rivers and canals break their banks. Floodwaters have covered fields and roads, cutting off towns and villages. Dozens of houses have been damaged or destroyed. Local teams are busy moving families from danger zones to safer places.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, high temperatures have sped up melting in the mountains. This has caused Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which have been especially tough on villages in Skardu and Ghizer. Bridges have washed away, farmland is ruined, and some communities are now isolated.

Rescue and Relief Efforts

Rescue work is underway in the worst-hit areas. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the Pakistan Army are using boats and helicopters to help people trapped by rising water. Emergency shelters offer food, medical help, and a safe place to stay for those who have lost their homes.

Officials are warning people to stay away from rivers and hillsides, which are at high risk of more floods and landslides.

Climate Change Link

Experts say that Pakistan is seeing more extreme weather because of rising global temperatures. Hot spells followed by heavy rain have become more common, especially in central and northern areas. According to a PMD spokesperson, the mix of fast glacial melt and strong rainfall highlights a changing climate.

Staying Safe and Prepared

Government agencies are urging everyone to follow weather updates and listen to emergency instructions. As the monsoon season continues, more rain and possible flooding are likely. Staying alert and ready to act can help protect families and communities during this challenging time.
