Polly Holliday, known for playing sassy Southern waitress Flo on the popular sitcom Alice, died September 9, 2025 at age 88. Reports confirmed that she died of pneumonia. Fans who grew up watching her bold personality and hearing her famous catchphrase, ‘Kiss my grits!’ felt deep sadness at the news of her death.
Holliday launched her career in the theater, but it was on television where Alice endeared her to audiences in the late 1970s. Her portrayal of Flo was so warmly received that it won her two Golden Globe Awards and its own spin-off series, simply called Flo. Though the spinoff lasted only a season, Holliday’s character was iconic in the annals of American television.
In addition to Alice, Holliday demonstrated her infinite ability in a diverse array of characters. She had parts in family favorites such as “The Parent Trap” (1998), in which she was the stern but funny camp counselor Marva Kulp Sr. She also held parts in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and other movies that had wide releases. Her ability to slide between comedy and drama demonstrated she had the stuff of the serious actress.
