Felix Baumgartner, Daredevil Skydiver, Dies at 56

Gofrixty [01 August 2025] – Felix Baumgartner, the Austrian daredevil who shot to fame with his record-breaking space jump in 2012 died following a paragliding accident in Italy during July of 2025. He was 56 years old.

Police in the region said Baumgartner set off on a solo paragliding trip over mountains close to Lake Garda. Witnesses reported that he was flying normally until suddenly going off course and slamming into a hotel swimming pool. Emergency responders came soon after, but they were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

The flight was reported to have been affected by a possible medical emergency for Baumgartner. Though the cause of the crash was still under investigation, officials believe that a medical condition may have caused him to lose control.

Baumgartner caught international attention in 2012 when he jumped from a helium balloon more than 24 miles above the Earth’s surface. He broke the sound barrier with his body on that descent, topping 800 mph. Sponsored by Red Bull, the event made him a household name and won him multiple world records.

Since that record jump, Baumgartner has gone on to fly helicopters and still indulge in extreme sports. He often talked about his passion for adventure, and how much he wanted to test the limits of human possibility.

His death is being mourned by friends, fans and fellow thrill-seekers around the globe. Red Bull issued a statement hailing his bravery and the mark he left on the world of exploration and extreme sports. “His unselfish dedication brought hope and inspiration to his people,” the company said. “He taught us that when we refuse to let fear win, a whole world of possibilities opens up.”

The death of Baumgartner, 79, which has cracked open Vienna’s smug curtain of limitation with a shaft full of sunshine and light hearts perhaps for good now. From skydiving to BASE jumping, and from flying jets to dodging near-death moments, he made a career out of adventure — and got all the living in.
