Gofrixty [24 July 2025] – Italy, the EU, and the US have decided to collaborate on a common 15% tariff rate for certain products. This comes amid ongoing talks to end trade tensions and avert larger economic tensions.
Delegates from the three parties had held intense discussions to hammer out a common position. They pledged to apply this common rate as a single tariff in order to simplify the rules of trade and minimise the risk of retaliatory tariffs. By harmonizing their efforts, they hope to take pressure off industries that were hit by trade barriers in the past.
The European Union, for its part, has also set out its stall: if there is no permanent deal by August 7, it will implement its own countermeasures. Leaders in the European Union hope to shield local manufacturers and farmers from potential damage from U.S. and Italian trade policies. Already, they have prepared retaliatory plans against major industries, including technology and agriculture.

Washington insisted on the benefits of a 15% rate as it urged Brussels to slow its riposte. U.S. trade officials told the world trade body that a single tariff brings stability for global markets that boosts investor certainty.
Rome, which is closely monitoring the situation diplomatically, also appealed for an “immediate solution”. Italian officials warned that a failure to lock in this agreement could rekindle a trade war. They also called for European partners to exercise flexibility while negotiations proceed.
All parties anticipate further meetings in late July. The E.U. could cancel its planned moves if negotiators agree to a long-term deal. In the meantime, the risk of European tariffs exists.
The attempt by the world’s largest economies to harmonize tariffs at 15% illustrates the push-and-pull that major economies juggle between national interests and global trade stability. With deadlines looming, both sides now need to act quickly to avoid the next stage in economic friction.
