United Kingdom clears Pakistan’s airlines to fly, ends five-year air travel restrictionsReading Time: 3 minutes United Kingdom allow Pakistani airlines to resume direct flights to the country, lifting a ban in place for over four years that imposed in the wake of a fake pilot scandal.

The decision follows the UK’s Department for Transport and Civil Aviation Authority accepting that Pakistan has made improvement to its aviation safety standard.The move comes after a detailed technical review and safety audit by UK officials along with Pakistan’s aviation authorities.

Pakistani airlines had already been under the ban since 2020, when a fake pilot license scandal raised serious questions about the safety protocols of the country’s flight authorities.

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority has since revamped its processes, with increased pilot checks, more effective training and better compliance with international standards. The changes enabled the UK to take Pakistan off its Air Safety List.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is planning to re-start direct flights to the UK, starting with services between Islamabad and London and Manchester.

The airline once flew several flights a week, and wants to recover lost revenue and earn back the trust of passengers in both countries.The revival of these routes set to benefit more than a million people of Pakistani descent in the UK.

British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott welcomed the announcement and praised Pakistan for bringing its aviation safety to global standards.

She said this development will enhance the people-to-people relationship and opportunities for business and tourism in the UK and Pakistan.

Pakistan officials, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, hailed the UK move as a big diplomatic victory.The development makes a fresh mark of confidence to the investor family at a time when Pakistan is imminently planning to privatize its national airline, he added.

Aviation experts also consider this a turning point for Pakistan’s once-flourishing aviation industry, which has confronted both regulatory and financial issues in recent years.

Now that the ban is removed, the Pakistani carriers will pursue the process for attaining operational permits by the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).Commercial flights may now officially begin, signalling the dawn of a new era in UK-Pakistan air travel.
