Due to the rapidly growing population, misuse of water, climate change, water pollution, and mismanagement of the irrigation system. Pakistan is facing the huge water crisis in the region.
This water crisis can cause a huge loss to the country in terms of food, and a decrease in agriculture production and will also affect so many other sectors of the country.
The National Water Policy reports are showing Pakistan moving from a water-stressed country. According to NWP, in 2016 the per capita surface water availability declined from 1951 to 1000 meters cubic and it is predicted it can fall by 860 meters cubic by the year 2025.
About 70 % of Pakistan’s population lives in areas of the country.
Rural people highly depend on the use of natural resources to fulfill their basic needs and for that, they need huge water to cultivate their lands and contribute to the country’s economy.
Agriculture is the most important sector of the country. Agriculture tributes in a major portion of the country’s economy.
Food and fiber is the basic need of the country and these come from the agriculture sector but due to water shortage. The country is facing huge food insecurity which will result in inflation, diseases, a decrease in exports, etc.
Water Crisis a nightmare for agriculture sector
The water crisis is have proved to be a nightmare for agriculture sector in Pakistan as it suffered the sector a lot. It caused a huge decline in crop production. Mainly it suffered from the two major crops of the country mango and banana. It is reported that the water shortage has caused a 40 to 50 % decline in mango production.
