Modi Comes Under Fire in Parliament for His Handling of Pakistan Conflict

Modi Comes Under Fire in Parliament

Gofrixty [30 July 2025] – Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced sharp criticism in India’s Parliament on Tuesday as opposition parties accused his government of severe bungling in dealing with the recent tensions with Pakistan. The furor followed reports of battlefield losses, murky diplomacy and the absence of a transparent plan during the brief but sharp exchange of fire between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Opposition leaders have charged that the Modi government has not been able to protect both national security and international credibility. They said India was taken aback by Pakistan’s aggressive retaliation and accused the Prime Minister of prioritizing political messaging over defense planning. Many lawmakers cited the ambiguity surrounding the ceasefire agreement and questioned whether foreign pressure was behind the decision to stop the fighting.

The Leader of the Opposition called on the Prime Minister to explain the situation directly to the public. He asked whether the United States or others in the larger world were somehow behind the peace moves, and if that represented a breach of India’s hard line against third-party mediation on matters affecting South Asia.

Several other members of Parliament expressed concern at a security lapse, suggesting that Indian intelligence had failed to predict the location of the militants’ entry across the cease-fire line. They slammed the Home Ministry for being “reactive” instead of “proactive” particularly in sensitive areas “for border States and especially for sensitive areas like Kashmir.” Some leaders even suggested that the government’s obsession with optics and slogans had led it to neglect real security steps.

There were protests in both houses of Parliament, with MPs calling for resignation and answers. Opposition parties demanded an independent inquiry into how the conflict was conducted and a full briefing on what, if any, strategic objectives had been achieved.

Though government ministers defended the operation and said that India’s interests had been protected, the political damage was done. It has turned into a lightening rod for criticism of the Modi government, calling into question its competence to run both diplomacy and defense in one of the most sensitive corners of of a volatile region.
