New Completion Date Fixed for Major Motorway Project

National Highway Authority has stepped up the proposed Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway project for completion by 2028.

The report was made to the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Assembly, who learned that a general procurement notice has been issued and negotiations are under way for joint financing with the OPEC Fund and Saudi Fund for Development.

Officials said that once contract awards and financing agreements are secured, work to construct the motorway can get underway.

The motorway is a key infrastructure project in Sindh, which aims to improve transport links and shorten travel times between Sukkur and Hyderabad.

Committee members inquired about the Islamic Development Bank loan that was gained to support the project.

They were worried that the interest rate had risen above six percent and both repayment dates are long. NHA officials explained that the loan conditions were set by the bank and include a 20-year repayment period plus five years of grace.

The Economic Affairs Committee has asked the NHA to report regularly on its progress toward building and completing this project.
