Pakistan Could Face Its “Coldest Winter in Decades”

Meteorologists predict Pakistan will face its coldest winter in years. They link this forecast to atmospheric circulation changes, with a marked peripheral western weather system that has seen temperatures plummet across the globe since June this year while our country simply takes part in what was originally supposed one small in long series of such events. Cities in the north and central provinces are already reporting an early chill this year, which suggests a long and intense season ahead.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), cold waves from Siberia will come to the country much earlier than usual. These icy winds can lower temperatures far below their seasonal norms. Heavy snow will fall on northern areas such as Gilgit-Baltistan and Skardu, while the plains of Punjab and Sindh may have unprecedented cold spells of air. Karachi too is likely to experience some very cold nights, a rarity for that otherwise sultry city.

Farmers and citizens are making ready for the bitter winter. An eye on early warning measures is advisable, especially in areas with no heating facilities. Demands for energy will increase as people use more gas and electricity to warm themselves. The authorities are also trying to keep a close eye on energy supplies in order that there should not be any shortages.

Climatic experts warn that rapidly changing environments and the melting of glaciers still upset normal weather patterns. They stress the need for better preparation and understanding in such conditions.

As Pakistan braces itself for what could become its coldest winter in decades, the country’s people are preparing on all fronts for a season which will be as much a challenge to their endurance and adaptability as anything else.
