Gofrixty [04 September 2025] –The United States Supreme Court has been asked to weigh in on whether the administration of former President Donald Trump acted within its authority when it imposed tariffs on more than $300 billion of products. Trump contends that the court is duty-bound to recognize expansive executive-branch discretion to shield American industries with trade measures.
Trump’s lawyers appealed after lower courts said the administration appeared to be acting outside its powers. They argue that Congress empowered presidents to respond swiftly to trade matters in order to protect national security and economic interests.
The case is about tariffs that Trump levied on steel, aluminum and broad variety of Chinese imports. Critics argued that those tariffs hurt American businesses and raised costs for consumers. A number of trade groups and importers sued to block the measures, arguing that the president had skirted proper checks on his executive authority.
