Financial Times websitePakistan’s fresh approach to Trump ‘rattles’ India

Gofrixty [12 August 2025] – Pakistan has stepped up diplomatic efforts to woo former US President Donald Trump, causing concern in India: FT Islamabad, too, engaged with the incoming Trump administration to deepen bilateral relations and win favor in regional geopolitics.

In a piece for The Financial Times, David Pilling argues that Pakistan is hoping to wield Trump leverage and attempt to counteract India’s dominance in South Asia. Pakistan officials reached out to Trump’s team directly, expressing their determination in the war on terror and peace in Afghanistan.

As a result, India responded to these developments in a guarded manner as it saw Pakistan’s approach that sought at challenging its position of regional supremacy. For New Delhi, the move signals Pakistan’s new strategic attempt to corner India by development of closer ties with the Trump administration.

Analysts point out that Pakistan sees an opportunity to capitalize on Trump’s hard line towards the war in order to stabilize Afghanistan and cast itself as a vital US ally. India for its part fears that increasing US reliance on Pakistan might undermine attempts to tackle cross-border terrorism and regional security.

The Financial Times notes that Pakistan outreach represents a wider reset in South Asian politics where Islamabad is searching for ways to assert itself given the changes in US policy. Hence India has to be alert about these developments and work towards maintaining its position as a regional power.
