Leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan Sign Peace Pledge at White House

Gofrixty [9 August 2025] – The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan met at the White House and signed a historic pledge to end decades of conflict. President Donald Trump hosted the ceremony and announced that both nations will immediately start full diplomatic relations, open borders, and begin trade.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan shook hands in the East Room and declared their commitment to a “permanent peace.” They vowed to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Trump called the deal “a new chapter for the Caucasus” and promised that the United States will support both countries in rebuilding trust and economic cooperation.

The agreement includes the creation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, a transport and trade corridor linking Azerbaijan’s mainland to its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenian territory. The plan covers railway, road, energy pipelines, and fiber-optic lines. Both governments believe the corridor will boost regional trade and improve infrastructure.

Trump emphasized that the pledge represents more than a ceasefire. “This is not just the end of war,” he said. “This is the beginning of partnership.” Pashinyan stated that Armenia seeks to “turn a painful history into a future of collaboration.” Aliyev called the day “a victory for peace” and thanked Trump for his mediation.

Both leaders also announced that they will nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. They credited his personal involvement and persistent negotiations for breaking years of deadlock.

The European Union welcomed the pledge and described it as a decisive step toward stability in the region. However, Armenian diaspora groups criticized the agreement for failing to address the fate of displaced Karabakh Armenians and for not resolving the issue of cultural heritage protection.

Despite concerns, the White House ceremony marked the most significant move toward peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan in decades. The leaders agreed to meet again in six months to review progress and maintain direct dialogue.
