The deal, concluded in Islamabad, paves the way for US energy corporations to work in parts of southern and western Pakistan where great untapped oil reserves are still to be exploited.
Mark PhillipsThe deal finalised there when US Energy Secretary Phillips called on Petroleum Minister of Pakistan in Islamabad. The deal provides for American access to potential sites for worth discovering in Balochistan and Sindh with cooperation aimed at sustainable drilling, generation of jobs and transfer of technology. Both sides described the deal as a significant step in enhancing bilateral energy relations.
“We are confident that this will have economic and strategic benefits for both countries,” explained Secretary Phillips. “Pakistan is full of promise, and we prepared to give assistance to unlocking it, while making sure that returns are fair and that environmental responsibilities are met.”
Pakistani officials lauded the investment, saying it would enhance energy security and bring in foreign money. “With this oil discovery, we have made a major breakthrough for our oil and gas sector,” Petroleum Minister Irfan Satti said. “Pakistan will get new infrastructure, modern technology for extraction and thousands of jobs.”
