HSBC Orders Managing Directors Back to Office Four Days a Week

Gofrixty [29 July 2025] – HSBC has directed its managing directors to work from the office on four days a week at a minimum, the people said. The action is part of the bank’s efforts to promote in-person collaboration and enhance visibility of leadership across such a global business.

The directive communicated to senior executives at internal meetings and in messages in recent days. The bank’s leadership has said the more physical presence in its offices will lead to better teamwork, faster decision-making and more meaningful interactions between its leaders and their teams.

The bank has a global footprint with large centres in London, Hong Kong, New York and Dubai. In some regional offices, a greater number of leaders are already working in the office, and others are implementing new schedules to meet the requirement.

The move reflects a larger trend at global banks to dial back remote work for senior employees. Banks including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup have taken similar steps, indicating a broader industry push to return to traditional in-office dynamics, at least at the highest level.

HSBC has yet to announce changes for more junior employees, and it applies only to managing directors at present. The bank is continuing to assess work patterns and business requirements in various locations.
