Gofrixty [25 July 2025] – French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron have launched a defamation lawsuit against U.S. rightwing commentator Candace Owens. The couple is accusing Owens of spreading harmful lies about them via her podcast and on social media.
The Macrons’ lawyers filed the legal complaint in a court in Paris earlier this week. They accused Owens of conducting a coordinated smear operation against Brigitte Macron’s identity and private life. The couple said Owens knowingly repeated groundless rumors that have already been discredited.
Owens, a longtime conservative commentator and media figure spoke about this lawsuit on her show. She denied any wrongdoing and portrayed the lawsuit as an assault on free speech. She said she merely raised issues that were already in the public domain.
The Macrons’ lawyers responded quickly. They said the French First Lady should be protected from targeted libel and online abuse. “Nobody, no matter their position or country of origin, should be forced to defend against character assassination,” one of their attorneys said.
