Gofrixty [17 August 2025] – Coperni has again shocked the fashion world, launching the Air Swipe Bag during Paris Fashion Week. In an unprecedented combination, this handbag is not made of a traditional material but NASA silica aerogel, which has been touted as the lightest solid on earth. A 99% air, 1% glass bag that appears almost clear like a cloud and both futuristic and delicate.
Weighing just 33 grams, or the equivalent of a standard lightbulb, the Air Swipe Bag It is surprisingly sturdy for its fragile appearance. Aerogel is capable of withstanding temperatures of up to 1,200°C and pressures 4,000 times its weight so not only does this stuff look great but it is also extremely resilient. It is a case of science and fashion converging, as Coperni has shown that the two worlds can merge into something actually functional and innovatively fabulous.
Researcher Ioannis Michaloudis and designers Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant collaborated to design the bag. They created 15 prototypes before finalizing the project, which now stands as the largest silica aerogel object ever made. The rounded silhouette is reminiscent of Coperni’s signature Swipe design, but in this instance it feels more like holding a pocket of air than a handbag.
