Taliban Bans Women’s Books at Universities in Afghanistan

Taliban Bans Women’s Books

Gofrixty [20 September 2025] – The Taliban has escalated its oppression of women’s rights by outlawing books written by female authors in Afghanistan’s universities. The decision was announced in Kabul, and libraries were directed to pull the works from their shelves immediately.

Direct orders went to the administrators of universities with a directive that they should be made to clear their shelves of books by Afghan and Foreign women. Librarians said Taliban officials visited campuses and oversaw the policy.

Students expressed anger and frustration. Female students said the Taliban aimed to eliminate their voice from education and culture. Male students have criticized the step, which they say Afghanistan’s academic atmosphere would crumble in such restrictions.

Writers also came out against the ban. The Taliban seeks to silence women and deprive future generations from benefiting from their ideas, said leading female writers. Rights groups around the world characterized the move as an attack on knowledge and freedom of expression.

The Taliban were not allowing women to be educated in most forms or to work or participate in public life. This new regulation widens the campaign and seeks to prevent women from influencing Afghanistan’s brainscape. Opponents argue that Afghanistan will never move forward if the Taliban continues to deprive half its population of education and culture.

The ban sparked global outrage. Several countries called on the Taliban to reverse the decision and respect women’s rights. Analysts say the move will likely worsen Afghanistan’s isolation and exacerbate the humanitarian and educational crisis.
