In Kashmir, Violence Portends a Bleak Future as India’s Lockdown Deepens

In Kashmir, Violence India’s Lockdown Deepens

Gofrixty [29 July 2025] – Kashmir is in crisis once more. A bloody assault in Pahalgam that left more than two dozen civilians dead has rocked the area and set off a political storm in New Delhi. The Modi government, which was already on the defensive over its Kashmir policy, is now being pummeled by opposition politicians and public critics. Some are questioning how such an assault could take place in the region that has long been a tourist draw and which authorities have declared to be relatively secure.

After the attack, the government unleashed “Operation Sindoor,” a cross-border raid aimed at what it suspected were militant camps. Borders were sealed, relations with Pakistan were frozen and tough new restrictions announced. But those moves are reactive, not preventive, critics say. The government’s approach, they say, is to be blame the other side, instead of addressing the deeper issues plaguing Kashmir.

There are calls in parliament for answers from opposition leaders. They expressed indignation about intelligence failures and asked how terrorists could slip past security to a popular tourist attraction. Those complaints have been met with silence from security officials, and government ministers have yet to back down from promises for “strong responses.”

In the meantime, life in Kashmir becomes more precarious. Residents say fear is growing, the military presence has become heavier and internet shutdowns are more common. Economic activity is slowing. Start-ups in Jammu and Kashmir have plunged in recent months — a sign that the threat of war and instability could be chasing away investors.

International concern is growing. Pakistan has warned that recent moves by India, including altering water-sharing agreements, could result in wider conflict. The United Nations has called on both nations to exercise restraint and go back to talking.

Despite pledges of normalcy following the revocation of the region’s special status in 2019, the situation seems to be worsening. Violence is rising, public trust is falling and the hope of peace seems as distant as ever. As tensions mount and questions linger, many are asking whether the government’s control over Kashmir is slipping — or whether it ever really existed.
