Google users can now create AI assistants without coding

Gofrixty [19 August 2025] – Google has launched Opal, a tool that enables anyone to create their own AI assistants without having to write any code. The introduction is a major push to bring artificial intelligence to the masses, not just developers or large companies.

Opal users just text their assistant, sending it a description of what they want it to do. Then, the platform translates those ideas into workflows by linking prompts, tools and A.I. models. For instance, someone might make a helper that summarizes emails, coordinates calendars or even builds rudimentary apps. They accomplish this using an interface that is clear and visual, and with which it’s easy to understand and modify.

Google Labs introduced a public beta of Opal in July 2025, initially in the United States. The company said it hopes to support people unlock the potential of AI in everyday life who don’t have a technical background. Without having to employ programmers or become adept in esoteric coding, anyone may now play around with A.I. and fashion tools that suit their own personal needs or the needs of their business.

The move is also part of Google’s broader strategy to be competitive in the fast-growing AI market. OpenAI and Microsoft, among others, have released products letting users customize AI experiences. With the introduction of Opal, Google hopes to empower individuals and inspire innovation at a smaller scale.

Yet critics raise potential challenges. There is some concern around security and data privacy if many people start building their own assistants without clear guardrails. Others (like Jack Clark of OpenAI) argue the tool is powerful but it ultimately depends on the responsibility users take designing and using their AI systems.

Nevertheless, Opal is welcomed by many as a harbinger of the democratization of AI. In slashing barriers, Google is handing the power to shape technology to ordinary folks in a way that can impact their lives.
