Black Seed – Heals Every Disease
There’s healing in black seed for all diseases except death,” said Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a hadith.-Sahih Al-Bukhari 5688
What is Black Seed?
Black Seed (Nigella sativa), also called black cumin, kalojeera or kalonji, is an annual plant of the family Ranunculaceae. Nigella sativa plant is found in the eastern Mediterranean, northern Africa, Indian subcontinent, and West Asia. The seeds are traditionally used as a spice. It also holds great importance in traditional medicine due to its highly diversified powers. It has been known as a herbal treatment for thousands of years.
Biochemical Constituents:
Black seed is rich in nutritional values. It contains significant proportions of protein, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamin A, B1, B2, C and niacin as well as calcium, potassium, and iron. It provides many of the same nutrients that the FDA recommends to help prevent disease and slow down the aging process. The active ingredients of black seed are nigellone, thymoquinone, and fixed oils.
Pharmacological Effects:
Nigellone has both anti-spasmodic and bronchodilating properties; thus making it useful in treating asthma and other respiratory ailments. It also acts as an antihistamine which helps to reduce the negative symptoms of allergy sufferers.
Thymoquinone, on the other hand, offers anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is also a powerful antioxidant and a stimulant of bile production and this is what gives the seed its very effective detoxifying quality.
The fatty oil constitutes the major part of the seed. It is mainly formed of polyunsaturated fats which are essential to human health. They help to regulate the general body metabolism and hormonal production and are essential in the maintenance of a healthy cell membrane. Also, the oil contains two important active ingredients: a saponin (melathin) and a bitter principle (nigellin). Both constituents have digestant, appetite stimulant, and mild intestinal cleansing effects. They also promote the function of the liver, gall bladder and kidneys, and help reestablish the body’s pH balance.
