Gofrixty [23 July 2025] – Former President Donald Trump signed a landmark trade deal with Japan that set a 15-percent tariff on key exports. The final deal, which seeks to refocusing trade priorities between the two countries, was signed in Tokyo by Trump and Japanese officials. Both sides hailed the agreement as a cornerstone of their economic ties.
Trump lobbied for this tariff change in his recent foreign policy talks. He maintained that Japan had to have a more balanced trade construction. The Japanese Prime Minister and trade representatives closely listened to Trump’s grievances and committed to negotiate. Both countries signed the agreement after a series of closed-door meetings.
Several American products, including agriculture goods and auto parts, will see a 15% tariff rate. Trump has said the deal will protect American farmers and manufacturers and bring access to Asian markets. In exchange, Japan won exemptions on digital exports and financial services.
Strategists say Trump honed in on Japan first as a matter of course because the country has long been a strategic ally. He was hoping to demonstrate that allies can negotiate good agreements without big-block tactics or global pressure. The White House called this strategy “America First diplomacy in action.”
