Toyota Officially Launches Woven City in Japan

Woven City in Japan

Toyota has finally unveiled Woven City, its new concept city of the future built at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan. The project is a significant step toward realizing a living laboratory where the latest innovations in mobility, energy, and daily living are tested at scale in an environment which resembles real-world conditions.

The city stands on the location of Toyota’s old Higashi-Fuji plant in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture. The first phase was completed in late 2024, and Toyota welcomed the first wave of residents — or “Weavers” as they are called — in September 2025. These residents — who were initially envisioned to be Toyota employees and their families — will inhabit Woven City, while also testing out new systems including self-driving cars, robotics, personal mobility devices, smart homes and artificial intelligence in a real-world environment.

Woven City was planned by Toyota as a connected community with all manner of energy efficient technologies, at its center will be hydrogen fuel cells. Here, however, the Streets are Three-Laned: One for Robo-Cars! Another for Bicycles and Personal Mobility Units! And a third for Human Feet. This design enables Toyota to explore emerging modes of transport in a safe, real-world setting.

The city’s initial phase will be home to about 300 residents. Toyota has said it hopes to eventually grow the population to about 2,000 people. Including researchers, scientists and members of the public. The company says it hopes the real-world testing will help accelerate innovation and faster delivery of advanced technologies to society.

More than just a way to get around. The Woven City will be a base for exploring smart infrastructure and sustainable living. Houses have sensor connected-health, energy consumption and household efficiency. Robots and A.I. helpers will be available to help with everyday tasks. Things that could teach Toyota about how people interact with new tools.

With the grand opening of Woven City, Toyota can bring this futuristic city project to life. The project illustrates the company’s aspiration to be more than just a carmaker. And to influence the cities of the future, in which technology and human lives mix effortlessly.
