The Latest Updates on the PSL’s Expansion Program

Two new franchises about to join the league in the 11th edition, set for April and May next year, this will be the biggest expansion that Pakistan Super League (PSL) has known.

Sources disclose that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now in the final stages of planning to include these new teams. This involves the framework of ownership and franchise rights.

Although the PSL has long been preparing for expansion, the decision was only taken in earnest post-season 10. The board now officially interviewed a list of potential new franchises to value the market, which is equivalent to from a certain angle providing part of floorspace allowing for future opportunity for ownership. With a league-wide valuation near conclusion as well as being close to finishing plans on how bids will be handled when teams comes in.

It is believed that the PCB is looking at an open auction model, where the highest bids win franchise rights and successful parties would also have freedom to pick team names for themselves and designate home cities off a preapproved board list.

In 2016, the PSL was launched with five founding teams: Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. Multan Sultans joined in 2018 creating the current six-team structure that has been a guiding point of Pakistan’s cricket calendar since then.
