Shehbaz Sharif Warns India of Decisive Action Over Indus Waters Treaty

Shehbaz Sharif Warns India

Shehbaz Sharif Warns India that any move to cut off Pakistan’s water in breach of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) will face a strong and immediate response.

Sharif said that water is essential for Pakistan and promised the country will protect its rights under international agreements without giving them up. Moreover, he reminded the audience of Pakistan’s military success on May 10, when the Pakistan Air Force downed six Indian fighter jets—an event he described as a historic moment that “sank India’s pride.”

The warning comes amid heightened tensions following India’s suspension of IWT engagements after accusing Pakistan of backing an April attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir—an allegation Islamabad strongly rejects. Furthermore, the May clashes marked some of the fiercest fighting between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in decades before a US-brokered ceasefire took hold.

The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, lays out the rules for how India and Pakistan share the rivers that flow from Indian territory into Pakistan. The treaty contains no clause allowing unilateral withdrawal, ensuring both sides follow a defined dispute resolution process.

Sharif stated that Pakistan views any violation of the Indus Waters Treaty as a serious threat to its survival and will confront it without hesitation.
