Production of a New Mobile Brand Could Soon Move to Pakistan

AirLink Communication is currently in the process of adding a new mobile phone brand to its local manufacturing lineup.

The company revealed earlier this week during its annual general meeting that these talks are ongoing but declined to identify the brand for now. Management, however, confirmed that preparations are underway to receive a major new partner within the existing infrastructure network.

At its Lahore-based headquarters, AirLink already puts together phones for a number of international brands. Bringing in another brand would expand on this capacity and be consistent with the government’s current efforts at boosting domestic production — a move the company sees as part of an overall strategy aimed to reduce reliance on imports, make costs more efficient and push employment through local assembly.

Business in the past several months has been productive for Pakistan’s mobile manufacturing sector. Government statistics indicate that this year alone, at least 3.5 million units have been manufactured domestically which represents a rise of 123% compared to last year’s figure. The upbeat trend is being fostered by policies that encourage local assembly instead of importing fully built products.

AirLink has consistently stated in its previous updates that its Lahore base is designed for all-out production and makes a substantial contribution to Pakistan’s mobile phone output. The company believes that expanding assembly operations, especially if certain product exports are authorized, could help improve the supply chain.
