Policeman killed

A policeman, while protecting a female polio vaccination team yesterday in Peshawar’s Matta section, was shot and killed by yet another attack, this one targeting health workers engaged in Pakistan’s long-running anti-polio campaign.

Two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle shot at a door-to-door vaccination campaign, said police reports Monday. The officer was hitting numerous times and died on the spot. The attackers escaped before reinforcements could arrive.

An extensive search operation by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police, shutting off access to the area and routes for escape, is undertaking to try and find the suspects. Security forces are increasing patrols to ensure that ongoing vaccination teams over the district remain safe.

Health authorities also replied in deep sorrow, they added, that such violence could reverse Pakistan’s progress in stamping out the disease.

Attacks on polio workers and their security guards have been a recurring problem in Pakistan where extremist groups claim falsely that vaccination drives are Western plots. It aims to wipe the virus out of Pakistan, one of only two countries remaining where it continues endemic.

Today’s tragedy drives home just how dangerous defending public health is. As authorities step up security and resolve to do their utmost, however, this fallen officer can stand as a model of brave spirit–protecting both the nation’s children and its future.
