Musicians Slain, Travellers Wounded in Kalat Bus Attack

Three people were gunned down and over a dozen others wounded after armed men ambushed a passenger coach in the outskirts of Kalat, Balochistan.The incident happened early Wednesday as the bus was driving from the city of Karachi to Quetta.

Eyewitnesses told police that the bus was shot at by unidentified attackers while it was passing through a desolate area.Bullets shattered windows, and passengers panicked. The assailants are said to have fired with automatic weapons from either side of the vehicle.

The musicians belonged to a local Qawwali party and were en route to after attending a performance in Quetta.They seated toward the front of the bus and killed instantly by several gunshot wounds.The other injured 13 passengers were rushed to Kalat District Hospital for medical attendance.

Security forces responded swiftly.They were arrived within minutes and began a search within the vicinity.The attackers are believed to have escaped into the hills nearby.

No one has taken responsibility for the attack.But authorities believe that the militants who operate there could have been behind the attack.Kalat and neighboring areas have been the site of similar assaults in recent years, many directed at travelers, security personnel and members of the country’s minority groups.

The local community was in shock.The families of the victims grieved for their loved ones, and many called for greater security on highways.Provincial officials denounced the attack and vowed justice.

Funeral prayers for the slain musicians took place later in the day.Their deaths served as a dark reminder of the prevailing violence in Balochistan, where a number of people are still being threatened while on routine travel.
