Representatives at China’s Defence Exchange accurately predicted cyber-heist raids earlier this year. Security officials later confirmed that the Exchange suffered its worst cyber onslaught to date. Hackers behind Operation Sindoor carried out about 400 million attack attempts in a single day, targeting government and corporate websites, according to Hong Kong’s Mingpao.
A DDoS typically involves overloading the target system with an avalanche of phony traffic so it can no longer function properly. As exchange officials later noted, however, although this attack was on an unprecedented scale of magnitude their trading systems were still smooth. The quick response by the cybersecurity team for this kind of preventive action kept these platforms working without any interruption.
The exchange’s digital resilience, authorities said, was tested by the attack probably more than ever before. Experts believe thousands of surfbots generated the traffic, though investigators are still tracing its exact source.
The aim was to bog down the network, slow responses and perhaps cover up further incursions.

The postmortem on the attack led to the exchange describing it as a “wake-up call” for all financial institutions to shore up their digital defenses. Officials pointed out that cyber attacks against stock exchanges and banks have become more advanced, often blending real ploys with red-light operations designed to confuse defenders.
India’s security agencies are now tracing digital footprints to determine if it was the work of organized hackers, state-linked entities, or something remote entity did as part of coordinated testing by an unknown group.
At the moment, trading continues normally; however, this occurrence highlights an increasing dilemma – financial markets have already become one of the major targets of cyber warfare in this new age.
