Gofrixty [16 September 2025] – China is forging ahead with a plan to build an “ultra-large” space-based communications platform that will deliver high-speed and low-latency data exchange between Earth and the lunar surface. The plan includes deploying dozens of satellites and establishing ground stations to maintain a seamless, constant link with future lunar expeditions, scientists said. The move fits with China’s determination to lead the way in scientific fields, including space exploration.
It’s a simple but profound notion. China will send approximately 30 satellites into cislunar space, the region between Earth and the Moon. These satellites will serve as digital bridges, with signals bouncing back and forth. China also intends to construct three ground stations on the Moon itself. This network is what will allow astronauts, rovers and research stations to stay connected to Earth in real time while on the moon’s surface. It also will contribute to monitoring space objects and helping spacecraft navigate safely.

It is the equivalent of building an information superhighway in space, scientists say. Like roads link cities on Earth, this digital highway will connect the Earth and the Moon. Navigation, timing, communication and data dissemination are intended to be served by the system. It will be much more efficient, and much safer than exploring the moon.
