Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed – The journey in the search of Murshid

Hazrat Sufi Shah Inayatullah Sufi al-Qadri (1656 – 1718 A.D) popularly known as Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed OR the Shah Inayat of Jhok Sharif belongs to Makhdoom family. He was one of three sons of Makhdoom Fazlullah Shah. Hazrat Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed was born in 1066 AH in 1656 AD at his ancestors’ hometown in Miran Pur. He began his early education under the supervision of his father, Makhdoom Fazlullah Shah.

In the age of fifteen, he became passionate to go for the search of Murshid. In search of a Murshid; along with three others, Amin Mohammad Naqshbandi, Shah Hamzo, and Mohammed Ibrahim started their journey from their homeland, state of Miran Pur. It was 1081 A.H and 1671 AD.

When Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed, accompanied his three friends, reached Multan. Shaikh Shamsuddin Multani was present in Multan city. After twelve months, Shaikh Shahi ordered that your trustee Syed Mahmood Al-Mutarif Datta Abdul Malik Gilani is near Bijanpur in the ministry of Hyderabad Deccan. So, they were suggested to leave for Bijanpur (currently it is in Punjab, India) to accomplish the purpose of their journey.

While travelling from Multan, he met Syed Ghulam Muhammad Shah (Dehlawi) in Jahanabad for a very short span of time. He took the lessons of mystic knowledge of Sufism and then accompanied Syed Ghulam Shah to Hyderabad to submit his pledge of allegiance to Datta Abdul Malik. Datta Abdul Malik, however, flatly denied that if you have any other problem not relating to this he will be available to help them. Hazrat Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed insisted Datta Abdul malik because they had travelled to Bijanpur with a purpose. After insisting so much, Datta Abdul Malik ordered that you come to Bijanpur. He himself (Datta Abdul Malik) lived in Hyderabad Deccan only came to Bijanpur on Friday night and he will have to return to Hyderabad Deccan.

When Hazrat Datta Abdul Malik Jilani arrived in Bijanpur from Hyderabad Deccan according to his orders Hazrat Sufi Sahib along with his friends were present in Bijanpur. Hazrat Datta Sahib, who ordered Hazrat Sufi Sahib who had pledged allegiance to sit in the bamboo forest, so he sat in Mujahideen following the orders of Hazrat Datta Sahib.

The lead of the Murshid became so deprived that he could not eat or drink. Even if the body forgets, the bamboo putt, one of the bamboo sticks cross from one end of Sufi Sahib’s shoulder to another end, it passed through the whole flesh and passed the bamboo itself.  In this case, the best period of forty days has passed.

There are several authentic traditions that he spent twelve months in the service of his Murshid Karim. When eleven months were completed, Datta Sahib made a common declaration of the saint of Ghadir as a member of his sanctification that,

Today I will fill the house of Sufi Inayatullah Shah, the jihadist of Ghaus-e-Azam, the custodian of the method. After that, those who wish for the Qadri series will attend the service of Sufi Sahib

Datta Sahib ordered to his son that you have allegiance to Hazrat Sufi Sahib. When twelve months were completed,  Datta Sahib presented three items to Sufi Sahib as a gift; the First one was Talwar (Sword), the second was Tasbee, and third was Musala (JaeNamaz). Then Datta Sahib asked Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed that select the one thing. Sufi Sahib selected Talwar (the sword).

Hazrat Datta Sahib told Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed that “O faker! what will you pay for this?”, Hazrat Sufi Sahib replied,“the price is my head”.

Hazrat Datta Sahib inspired by the answer and said to Hazrat Sufi Sahib that when the time has come, don’t do anything just to give your sacrifice. The crown and the garoo was also presented to Hazrat Sufi Sahib. That crown and garoo are worn by the current Sujada Nasheen in every annual URS Mubarak of Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed. The title of “Sahib Kareem” was also given to Hazrat Sufi Sahib and till today every Sujada Nasheen had given the same title “Sahib Kareem”.

There is a famous quote of Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed, a revolutionist and anti-feudal Sindhi Sufi, that he used to say to his followers that:

“Jo Kherey so khaaye” commonly known “as sow so shall you reap”
