16-July has been celebrated as “The World Snakes Day” all over the world. The main theme of this day is to keep people aware of these species.
Except for Antarctica, Snakes found in all the parts of the world. There are about 3,500 known species found. Amongst them, only 600 are venomous, and rest all are non-venomous. Within these venomous snakes, only 200 are such species that are highly venomous and whose bite can not be treated at the given time.
The world’s smallest venomous snake is spotted dwarf adder (Bitis Schneider) found in Africa and its length is approximately 7 inches to 11 inches only. And the world’s largest Venomous snake is King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) found in south and southeast Asia. Its length is about 12 feet to 18 feet.
The world’s smallest non-venomous snake is Barbados thread snake (Tetracheilostoma carlae), which found in Barbados. And the world’s Largest non-venomous snake is Python, that found in Asia, Africa, and Australia. It’s length is about 2 feet to 32 feet. The world’s heaviest non-venomous snake is Green Anaconda (Eunectes murinus) found in South America, it’s weight is about 500kgs.
Snakes are carnivorous, due to which they feed on small insects, Rodents, Birds, Eggs, small Mammalians and Birds, Frogs, and Fishes. However, Snakes itself are feed for many animals, such as; Birds and Reptiles.
Snakes do not have ears but they can detect any change in the environment with the help of their fork.
The lifespan of snakes is in-between 10 to 25 years and some snakes have a maximum lifespan of 40 years.
Snakes do not have legs but they move by the help of their long backbone, ribs, and muscles.
Snakes do not sting but bite, only venomous snakes have 2 fangs in their mouth by which they inject their venom into the prey and kill them for feed. On the other hand, non-venomous snakes hunt their prey by capturing and eating them by their teeth.
According to WHO, about 1,50,000 persons lost their lives every year due to snake bite. And the highest rate of casualties found in Asia.
Either snake is venomous or non-venomous it never attacks first on humans. It only attacks in its defense, when you are nearby a snake or trying to capture that.
Humans are not the feed of snakes. Snakes always bite humans for the sake of their defense.
In case of a sudden encounter with a snake, try to make a proper distance it will go away without harming you.
According to Pakistan’s Wildlife Law, it is illegal to kill any non-venomous snake. If any of you found a snake in human territory try to let it go or call the rescue team on 1122 to avoid any illegal activities.
