920 killed and 600 injured by earthquake in Afghanistan, as Afghanistan is hit hard by a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.1 this Wednesday, which has killed hundreds and injured many. The numbers are shared by the Taliban’s disaster management official, Sharafuddin Afghanistan’s deputy minister for disaster management.

Rescuers in the remote Paktika and Khost provinces are trying to assist people in trouble and treat the injured.

Helicopters were used in rescue efforts to save victims and bring them to hospitals.

Says an interior ministry official Salahuddin Ayubi.

Death toll expected to rise

Haibatullah Akhunzada the supreme leader of the Taliban has said hundreds of houses were destroyed and the death toll could likely be rising as some of the villages are in the mountains in remote areas and it is not easy to collect details, however, it will take time to know the real numbers. Haibatullah Akhunzada offered his condolences in a statement.

According to Bilal Karimi, who is a deputy spokesperson for the Taliban government nearly four districts of the Paktika province were shaken by the strong earthquake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGC), this earthquake is the most lethal since 2002. The earthquake struck on Wednesday morning in the city of Khost, therefore which is about 95 miles south of Kabul.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also said that in Islamabad and in the province of Punjab at some places the tremors of the powerful earthquake were felt and they reported it was of magnitude 6.1.
